The Ramparts of Tharrenton Deep were successfully breached, but the price of doing so was steep. Some men died. Some men went missing. The tiny village of New Tharrenton can no longer be home.
Old evils were newly found, and a new evil was discovered. The village will need to be protected.
The survivors of the first expedition to the dwarven ruin are reeling. Despite their losses and their sorrow, they resolve to journey back to the ancient city. But they are not alone. The Ramparts of Tharrenton Deep Book Two eBook N Porter Kane
N. Porter Kane continues his strong writing and interesting fantasy world, following the continuing adventures of four of his best characters from Book One as they go back into Tharrenton Deep for reasons related to the events of the first book. If anything, Book Two is even better than Book One, shedding the lengthy introductory chapters that weighed down Book One and carrying forward Kane's gift for dialog and narrative and bringing in more action and more exotic creatures and locales as the party presses on into the Deep. Book Two is also helped by the strong characters of Tym, Orris, and Sammus, as their personal and interpersonal struggles keep things on edge, while their unique skills keep the party alive in spite of the initially rather useless protagonist, Aine, who drove the party to return to the Deep but isn't able to offer much in terms of value to the party through much of the book. That's not meant as a criticism, of course, as the "hapless protagonist who grows stronger" is one of the few fantasy tropes Kane recycles in his universe, and it gives us readers something to hang onto in a world in which most things aren't what they initially seem and other cliches get toppled and trampled along the way. You could actually read Book Two without reading Book One and not be completely lost, but you'd miss out on why the things we know about the characters in this book are so cool compared to what we thought we knew about them in the last.As I mentioned in my review of Book One, Kane has a fluid writing style that is unlike pulp fiction fantasy books I've read. The characters' speech patterns are clearly not from our own modern world, but neither are they stilted pseudo-Shakespeare. While the book is full of sentences that made me smile and think, "good line," there are no "put those in the trailer" quotes that a director would zoom in for a tight shot and cue dramatic music for, and I'm glad about that.
The Kindle versions are inexpensive, and if you are a fan of the genre and/or into supporting indie authors, I recommend you pick them both up.

The Ramparts of Tharrenton Deep Book Two eBook N Porter Kane Reviews
Fantasy at its best. The continuing story keeps the fast pace of the first book and lets your imagination take over and doesn't gently lead you to the end. I am waiting for Mr. Kane to take me on another adventure.
Kane improves on Book One - an already high standard. The story line grips the reader immediately with vivid descriptions that make you feel underground in the depths. Clear your calendar before you start - this one will grip you until you finish. This is not a few pages a night before lights out kind of book. For those fantasy and/or Dungeons and Dragons fans, there's a great mix of familiar and new creatures that lurk in the depths and I think Kane improved the story by simplifying the number of names that was "Tolkeinesk" in the first novel. I agree with other readers that you could enjoy this one without reading book one. Can't wait to read more about Ulfaden the Mighty....Mr. Kane - we want more!
